Lost Trail Lodge is the kind of place that takes effort to reach — it’s located deep in Coldstream Canyon, outside the town of Truckee, not far as the crow flies from the backside of Sugar Bowl ski area. In the summer, you can drive 4 miles down a dirt road to get here, but in the snowy season, you’ll need to ski, snowshoe or snowmobile your way in. Which makes arriving at this four-bedroom, off-the-grid lodge with a chef’s kitchen even more rewarding.
Once a popular Tahoe-area backcountry destination, the lodge has been closed to visitors since 2022, following the tragic death of 16-year-old Kiely Rodni, the granddaughter of the lodge’s original owner, David Robertson.
This week, after years of being on the market, the lodge has officially sold to a new owner, Campfire Ranch, a Colorado-based lodging outfitter. Campfire Ranch operates a full-service campground outside of Crested Butte, Colorado, a backcountry hut on Red Mountain Pass near Silverton, Colorado, and a newly opened mountain bike lodge in northwest Arkansas.
